Understanding Gynecomastia

Male Breast Tissue — Causes & Correction

Gynecomastia refers to the enlargement of breast tissue in males due to an imbalance of oestrogen and testosterone. It affects up to 30% of men at some point in their lives and can cause significant embarrassment, self-consciousness and avoidance of social situations.

Dr. Thusay offers a thorough clinical assessment to determine the grade of gynecomastia and recommend the optimal technique — liposuction alone, glandular excision, or a combination — achieving a flat, masculine chest without visible scars.

Grade 1–2 (Mild-Moderate) — Scarless liposuction removes excess fatty tissue for a flat, natural chest.
Grade 2–3 (Glandular) — A tiny peri-areolar incision (hidden at the nipple edge) allows removal of the firm glandular disc under the nipple.
Grade 3–4 (Severe) — Combination approach with skin excision where required, with scars carefully planned for minimal visibility.
Puffy Nipple Correction — Targeted subareolar tissue removal for men with nipple prominence only.

Gynecomastia FAQs

For Grade 1–2 gynecomastia treated with liposuction alone, the tiny entry ports (2–3 mm) heal to near-invisible marks within a few months. Where glandular excision is needed, a small incision is placed at the lower edge of the areola, where it blends naturally with the skin colour change.

Removed fat cells and glandular tissue do not regenerate. However, significant weight gain or the use of anabolic steroids, certain medications or recreational drugs can cause recurrence. Dr. Thusay will advise on how to maintain your results.

Absolutely. All consultations are completely private and confidential. Our clinic team is trained to handle sensitive conditions with discretion.

Most patients return to desk work within 5–7 days. Compression vest must be worn for 4–6 weeks. Gym and exercise resumed at 3–4 weeks post-surgery.

Post-operative discomfort is mild to moderate and managed effectively with oral pain medication for the first 3–5 days. Most patients are surprised by how comfortable the recovery is.

Common causes include hormonal changes during puberty (often resolves on its own), obesity, anabolic steroid use, medications (some antihypertensives, antidepressants), and in rare cases, underlying hormonal disorders. A blood test is often done to rule out hormonal causes.

Dr. Thusay's experience with over 600+ aesthetic surgeries — including many gynecomastia corrections — means he understands the nuances of male chest anatomy. The aim is always a masculine, flat, natural-appearing chest that is proportional to your body.

Surgery is recommended once breast tissue has been stable for 12 months or more — typically from age 18 onward. Adolescent gynecomastia is monitored, and surgery deferred until growth is complete.
